Once, long ago, we had only our senses to guide us, and we knew the world through them. We knew not only that the world is inhabited by enchanted things, but that the world itself is magical. We were faithful captives of our imagination. “Way Through the Woods” is a window into the world in which, once upon a time, you and I lived.
When I was a child, I undertook many journeys in Les Bois de Boulogne, the most spectacular park in Europe. The park contained forested areas, wrought-iron gates and meandering gardens covering a vast 22 miles of pathways. Sometimes I took a horse-drawn carriage along those gravel avenues of chestnut trees; but better still were the hidden pathways discovered only by walking.
Behind the next bend – who knew what I might find! A little girl blowing soap bubbles which float across the Atlantic. A tight-rope walker sashaying between the treetops. The world was a wonderful discovery. Reasons and logic were irrelevant. The heart knew.
